All too often we are caught up in the things of this world, drawn into societal expectations and worldly desires; testing us and tempting us away from God. James 1:2-18 encourages us to shift our frame of reference away from such things and towards the eternal, so that we may face trials and temptations with joy and humility.

This parable destroys the idea that “looking good” equates to “being good”. To apply a modern cultural lens, we see ourselves as “long-time church going, clean-living Christians” who would never walk by a man lying half dead on the side of the street.
