Read 1 Samuel 8
It can be easy to take things into our own hands when we feel insecure or uncertain about the future. This is certainly what the Israelites did. Instead of trusting God who delivered them from Egypt and their numerous enemies, they rejected him and asked for a human king. Fortunately, we know Jesus, the perfect King who has defeated our ultimate enemy, Sin and death and brought us into his Kingdom.
So then, we can have security and hope, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Romans 14:17.
- When is a time in your life when you have tried to rely on yourself instead of trusting God?
- In 5 and 20 what are the Israelites convincing themselves of?
- God has revealed Jesus as the Messiah and perfect king, what makes him a good king? Have a read of Matthew 6:32–34 to find out more. How does Jesus give us comfort and peace?
Prayer: Dear Father, I am sorry for the times when I try to take life into my own hands and don’t trust your good and perfect will. Help me to surrender to you, the creator and protector of my soul. May today I live as a citizen of your kingdom, under the perfect king Jesus. Amen.
