Read Psalm 23
I first learnt this by heart when a young child. In my early teens I gained an understanding that the Lord was my shepherd. Now as an older person I have been able to appreciate the richness of the meaning and how this Good Shepherd has been with me all my life and my future is secure for I shall dwell with Him forever.
Unlike many other psalms that show the majesty and power of God, this is a very personal Psalm of David and his relationship with his eternal Shepherd.
The Psalm’s opening line is The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not be in want. David then goes on to show us how his Shepherd provides for his needs. He gives rest and refreshment as well as restoration of the soul. David is confident that his Shepherd will guide him on paths that will bring security and hope for He is the God of all creation.
Verse 4 addresses the challenges and curve balls that life brings, and David shows his complete trust in the Shepherd as he knows he is with him and offers comfort in the darkest of days.
Verse 5 and 6 give a glimpse of the ultimate victory where David is in the presence of God and he knows the abundant blessings of God’s goodness and love. He will dwell with God forever.
